Working with Bernie: The Initial Consultation

A typical initial consultation involves traveling to a client's location and meeting with management for two days. The purpose of this meeting is to establish a common understanding of what is expected. During this engagement he reviews current direct marketing programs, lead generation and telephone selling programs. He will help determine action steps for the successful growth of all aspects of direct marketing.

During the initial engagement, he will help identify allowable direct marketing costs to allow effective planning. He will meet with management to gain concurrence concerning cost and objectives for direct marketing, database selling, telephone selling and other alternative selling activities. Some of the areas he’ll focus on are:

  • Existing distribution channels and how direct marketing interfaces to the current channels will be reviewed and discussed. If enhancements or changes are appropriate, he will recommend how to best implement the new approach.
  • Evaluate current organization for direct marketing, customer support and telephone selling and recommend changes and enhancements.
  • Examine current inbound and outbound telephone procedures and organization and help identify the best approach for meeting the long-term goals of the company.
  • Review current reporting and compensation programs and recommend changes and enhancements as appropriate.
  • Examine the existing computer files and understand what information is and is not available. Understanding the existing database or information files will be necessary to design effective programs for the future. Identify and suggest alternative approaches to database and computer file management to facilitate customer and prospect support.
  • Once the objectives are understood, develop a detail set of objectives for direct marketing. Determine where direct marketing can play the most successful and complimentary role. Help create an offer that can produce qualified leads or actual sales.

The output from the initial engagement is a detailed plan summarizing discussions, recommendations and alternatives. The plan frequently contains budgets, flowcharts and recommendations that can be implemented immediately.
